AI chatbot for clinics: what it tells the patient, what it leaves to the doctor
Updated:
In a clinic, an AI assistant does two things well: it gives the patient an immediate, accurate answer, and it leaves the medical decision to the doctor. This article explains where the line sits.
Clinic-centric AI
Clinic-centric AI is an assistant that speaks with the clinic's information and follows the clinic's rules. It answers the patient, books the appointment and leaves the decision to the doctor.
Four features make this possible: the assistant gets work done, states only the clinic's information, stays within its guardrails, and the team takes over whenever it wants.
It books the appointment itself (AI agent)
Alongside the conversation, the assistant also gets work done. It reads the free slots from the calendar, offers them to the patient and books the appointment.
If asked the price of a treatment with no amount entered, it passes the question to the team. The question waits in the panel as a patient request.
It states only the clinic's information (grounded AI)
The clinic enters prices and campaigns in the panel. The assistant states only that amount and adds that the exact amount is confirmed at the examination.
Treatment information comes from the clinic's service list. What is on the list is explained; the decision is the doctor's.
It routes medical questions to the doctor and emergencies to the clinic (AI guardrails)
When a patient writes "I have a toothache", it takes the complaint seriously and suggests an examination. The doctor makes the diagnosis.
To a patient describing bleeding, swelling or fever after a procedure, it gives the clinic's number and 112. These rules are written into the code and work the same way in every clinic.
The team takes over whenever it wants (human-in-the-loop)
When someone from the team types into a conversation, the assistant steps aside in that conversation. Under every message you can see who wrote it.
In draft mode, the assistant's reply waits for the team's approval before it is sent. For new clinics this mode is on during the first week.
It is honest with the patient
When the patient asks, the assistant says that it is software. It hands a patient who asks for it over to the team; the request appears in the panel under the heading "Talk to a person".
Four questions when evaluating an assistant
Where does it get the price from? What does it do with an urgent message? What happens when the team steps in? When is the conversation deleted?
The answers to these four questions show whether an assistant is right for your clinic.
